Charles Garland

Charles is a writer, composer, television producer / director, and performance poet.

His diverse career includes working as an actor; writer; composer; cabaret artist; singer/guitarist; organist; campanologist; after dinner speaker and beetroot boiler.

Despite starting professional life as a very short dancer in a musical, situation comedy has been his main interest, as a writer, director and producer. He has written a large number of comedies, none of which has ever been shown, but all of which have titles ending with an exclamation mark. This neat trick was learned from David Croft OBE.

Charles worked on many situation comedies while on the staff at the BBC, including Terry and June; Joint Account; The Brittas Empire and Last Of The Summer Wine as assistant producer, although most of his time was spent as assistant to David Croft, on Hi-De-Hi!; ‘Allo ‘Allo!; You Rang, M’Lord? and Oh, Dr Beeching! as Producer.
Nice punctuation. Nice OBE.

Charles is now freelance, and concentrating on his five full length stage musicals; two fifty minute musicals for schools; three screenplays; two stage plays; a television drama; three documentaries; two panel shows; a new sitcom; and half a novel which hasn’t been touched for weeks, for obvious reasons.
