Director
Ron Daniels was born and brought up in Brazil, where he was a founder member of the renowned Teatro Oficina, in São Paulo. He is a former Artistic Director of The Other Place Theatre, the RSC’s experimental theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, England and after 15 years with the company he was named an Honorary Associate Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
From 1991 to 1996 he was the Associate Artistic Director of the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, MA, where he directed HENRY IV parts 1 and 2, HENRY V, HAMLET, THE TEMPEST, THE CHERRY ORCHARD, THE SEAGULL and many other productions.
Ron now lives in New York and works as a freelance director. He has directed at many of the major regional theatres across the US as well as in New York, where he directed ONE FLEA SPARE at the Public Theatre, RICHARD II, RICHARD III and MACBETH for The Theatre for a New Audience in POINTS OF DEPARTURE, a new play by Michael John Garcés, for INTAR, the Latino theatre company in New York and a workshop of THE SUITCASE TRILOGY by Han Ong, for the Ma-yi Theatre company. Most recently, he directed the hip hop musical KINGDOM, about Latino street gangs, at the Old Globe in San Diego, THE TAMING OF THE SHREW for the Shakespeare Festival of 2010 and MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING for Shakespeare Festival of 2011 at the Old Globe. Upcoming is a new production of HAMLET in São Paulo, Brazil.
Ron’s work in opera includes new productions of Mozart’s IL RE PASTORE (Boston Lyric Opera), Bizet’s CARMEN (Houston Grand Opera, Opera Pacific, Michigan Opera Theatre), Puccini’s MADAMA BUTTERFLY (San Francisco Opera, Opera Pacific, Austin Lyric Opera, Colorado Opera, Florida Grand Opera, Washington National Opera, Palm Beach Opera), Britten’s THE TURN OF THE SCREW (Berkshire Opera), Puccini’s TOSCA (Theatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro), Mozart’s COSI FAN TUTTE (Arizona Opera and Pittsburgh Opera), Verdi’s LA FORZA DEL DESTINO (San Francisco Opera), TOSCA (Colorado Opera), Mozart’s DIE ENTFUHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL at the Opéra de Nice and IL POSTINO, by Daniel Catán, which had its world premiere in September 2010 at the LA Opera starring by Plácido Domingo. IL POSTINO then performed at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna, at the Châtelet Theatre in Paris, at the Teatro Bellas Artes in Mexico City and at the Internacional Festival of Cervantino in Guanajuato, Mexico. His production of Sondheim’s SWEENEY TODD, THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET at the Opera Theatre of St. Louis received rave reviews. Latest projects include a revival of MADAMA BUTTERFLY at the LA Opera in November 2012 and new productions of PAGLIACCI and IL TABARRO at the Opera Theatre of St Louis in June 2013.
Ron was the Executive Producer on LAWN DOGS, produced by Duncan Kenworthy for Rank Films. His first feature film entitled THE WAR BOYS had its premiere at the HBO Latino Film Festival in New York at the end of July 2009.
